Academy Awards 2013

After a year of absence, I decided to start writing on this blong. So I have to ask you for another time to excuse me for the level of my english. I'm from Greece, but as movies concern people from all over the world, I want every single one on this planet understand what I'm talking about. So let's begin.. (So much to say)..
Well 2012 was quite a nice year. The only thing I have to remind is the Palme d' Or which was given to Michael Haneke for his movie Amour with Emanuelle Riva and Jean-luis Trintignant.

The reason I mentionned this film is that it is nominated for the Academy Awards for which I'm going to talk about. As far as Cannes festival is concerned, I haven't anything else to say, except the fact that Marion Cotillard and Emanuelle Riva did not take a prize for their acting which was quite a paradox. So, let's continue with the Academy Awards...

Let's begin with this year nominations.
Best motion picture of the year

Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty
Silver Linings Playbook

I guess that everybody knows about the rest nominations, so I have not to talk about them. But I want to mention the nominations for the Best Foreign Film
Here are the nominations
Amour (Austria)
Rebelle (Canada)
No (Chile)
En cogelig affaere (Denmark)
Kon-Tiki (Noraway)

I have to say that from the films above I've only seen Amour which was really great. Consequently, I can't presume who will win the award, but I believe that Haneke really deserves it (He is also nominated for 4 awards)

Also, another film that I have to talk about is Beasts of the southern wild, which really deserves watching it. The little girl Quvenzhane Wallis is stunning and the soundtrack is fantastic..

Last but not least, great is also the film of Ang Lee "The life of Pi" which is astonishing. Actually, in the middle of the film, I wanted to leave, because I was too frightened. :)

Stay here for further information.. Good to see you again!

Cannes Film Festival News!

News of the day!! Nanni Moretti will lead the Cannes festival Comittee.
Nanni Moretti is an Italian director who was also a memeber of the festival comitee a couple of times before. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0604335/
Many of his films, such as  La stanga del figlio, Habemus Papam, Il caimano, Aprile, Caro Diario, Ecce Bombo were nominated/won the Palme d'or (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0604335/awards)
Given the preferences of the director, we can tell that the film wich will win the Palme D'or this year will not be an american film. Previous years, he chose for the Palme d'or films such as Taste of Cherry (Abbas Kiarostami) and "Unagi" (Shôhei Imamura) .
Director "Nanni Moretti)
Let's see what will happen next!!!

The nominations for the Bafta Film Awards have been announced.
Drive, The Help, The descendants, The Artist and  Twinker Tailor Soldier Spy are the films fighting for the Award of The Best Film.
Brad Pitt, Jean Dujardin, George Clooney, Garry Oldman and Michael Fassbender are the 5 nominees for the Best Actor and Berenice Bejo, Meryl Strip, Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis are the nominees for the Best Actress Award.

Finally, the 5 films that vie for the Award of the Best foreign language Film are: Incendies, Potiche, Pina, The Skin I Live in and A Separation.
I would like to mention that Incendies was a nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, so it may be the winner of the Bafta Film Award of the Best Foreign Language Film. What's more, Potiche is a French movie starring Catherine Deneuve (Dancer in the Dark) and Gerard Depardieu (Asterix et Obelix). The Skin I live in is a film of Pedro Almodobar starring Antonio Baderas. Finally, A Separation is characterised by many as"THE FILM OF THE YEAR". My predictions?

  1. A separation
  2. Incendies
  3. The Skin I live In
  4. Pina
  5. Potiche

Let's give a look at the nine foreign films,
Bullhead (Belgium)
The young Limburg cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille is approached by an unscrupulous veterinarian to make a shady deal with a notorious West-Flemish beef trader. But the assassination of a federal policeman, and an unexpected confrontation with a mysterious secret from Jacky's past, set in motion a chain of events with farreaching consequences. BULLHEAD is an exciting tragedy about fate, lost innocence and friendship, about crime and punishment, but also about conflicting desires and the irreversibility of a man's destiny

Monsieur Lazhar (Canada)
An Algerian immigrant is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically.

Superclassico (Denmark)

Pina (Germany)

A tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch.
A separation (Iran)

A married couple are faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimers.
(It is also considered the best film of the year)

Footnote (Israel)

Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are father and son as well as rival professors in Talmudic Studies. When both men learn that Eliezer will be lauded for his work, their complicated relationship reaches a new peak.

Omar killed me (Morocco)

What if you woke up one day and found the police at your door? What if they told you that the woman you had always thought of as a mother was murdered and that, moments before she died, she wrote in her own blood that it was you who killed her?

In darkness (Poland)

A dramatization of one man's rescue of Jewish refugees in the Nazi-occupied Polish city of Lvov.

Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (Taiwan)

During the Japanese rule of Taiwan, the Seediq were forced to lose their own culture and give up their faith. Men were subject to harsh labor and kept from traditional hunting; whereas women had to serve the Japanese policemen and their families by doing the household work and giving up their traditional weaving work. Above all, they were forbidden to tattoo their faces. And these tattoos were seen as the Seediq's traditional belief to transform themselves into Seediq Bale ("true humans").
